UPDATE - It's been a little over 2 weeks now since my combined surgery involving the removal of a torublesome fibroid uterine tumor, a cyst, and an unexpected emergency perfotated appendix and abdominal abscess. I was in the hospital for 3 days and then confined to home for 1 week before slowly venturing outside and building my strength back up. Because I had such a dangerous infection and severe anemia I was getting between 5-6 injections of antibiotics and iron a day in the bum, which totally sucked and let's not mention the condition of my bum right now :(thanks to my roommate for having the guts to give the injections). I have to continue with oral antibiotics for at least 2 more weeks and possibly longer as the doctor does not want to take any chances of the infection re-occuring (my fallopian tubes were completely blocked with infection and they wanted to remove them, but couldn't because they needed my signature and I was under anesthesia). My doctor continues to emphasize the fact he's done 10,000 surgeries and this is only the 3rd time he's seen such a bad infection. I am lucky they diagnosed the appendix when they did, I had already had 1 trip to the ER 5 days before and they couldn't find the problem. My recovery is going well, my incision is about 5 1/2 inches but not too painful anymore. Yesterday I returned to work and it feels good to be getting back to normal life. Again my thanks to everyone who helped me emotionally and financially, you all helped more than you could possibly imagine. And many thanks to you Jon for posting about my situation on your blog. I think your idea for a retirement plan is a good one, how do we start??

In answer to a previous post about conditions in Turkey, I have lived here a litle more than a year and a half and I can honestly tell you that it is highly unlikely that Turkey will ever become a member of the EU. Secondly, there IS a state insurance card for people who do not have money so they can get treatment at government hospitals, but you MUST be a Turkish citizen to receive this insurance. There is absolutely NO help for foreigners whatsoever. And lastly surgeries ARE that cheap here, and maybe this is a good reminder of how much we are being robbed in the US for medical care. Since the Turkish Lira keeps falling in value against the US Dollar it made it even cheaper. I understand you couldn't possibly know all of his since you don't live here, so I am not offended. Thanks for your concern. If anyone has any questions or wants to say hi they can e-mail me directly at greasydogs@gmail.com.

Hugs!

She is an American artist, from the Bay Area working in Turkey while she travels abroad. Maybe she can tell you more about her operation, but I know money is tight for her there and I thought we could help out. We (bay area artists) are the social security system for one another. It might be good to start our own insurance/retirement plan.

Thanks for the questions, I assumed most people that donated would know her, glad to see complete strangers caring enough to write wanting to know more.

Hey thank you very much for posting this :) Actually my "relatives" have no money, my parents are broke, otherwise they would help of course. And my financial situation here in Istanbul is bad, work is more scarce now (as it is there), and yes although $2000 is not a ton of money, it is when you don't have it and don't make enough to get it anytime soon. And yes, my friends ARE my family! Hugs to everyone and thanks for everything, especially your love and wishes.

I admit that calls for help like these get me engaged very easily, even if I never heard about the person in question before. However, this is about the most unspecific call for a donation that I've seen in a long while.

First, Turkey is in the process of becoming a member state of the European Union. Thus I strongly suspect there is a social security system in place that pays for medical bills whenever someone can't afford necessary operations. And that raises questions about the nature of this whole thing. Also, major surgery is usually more expensive than $2000.

I realize I'm being somewhat of an ass, and I'm probably crazy for putting my real name on this post - but count me in as one of the people who would probably help this person if only there was an actual case being presented here.

1) Who is Cherie "Rat Girl"?
2) What is the operation?
3) Why isn't she paying for her operation herself? Or why aren't realtives helping her?
